Rendition: In this world, many people are familiar with the Name and Past-times of Kr̥ṣṇa–The Supreme Personality of God-Head and His elder brother Balarāma.|1| Vēdas and Purāṇas provide many evidences in an open manner and thus sing the glory of the Lord. The fortunate persons hear these scriptures and thus vanquish their miseries by engaging themselves in the devotional service of Kr̥ṣṇa and Balarāma. |2| But that same Kr̥ṣṇa has now appeared as ‘Gaurāṅga’ in a hidden form (Channa-avatāra)– who is the Personification of Supreme Mercy, for the propagation of devotional service by the method of the congregational chanting of the Lord’s Holy Names (Śrī-Hari-Nāma-Saṅkīrtana).|3| Even though Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, being non-different from Kr̥ṣṇa, is the treasure house of all good qualities– most people in this world are not familiar with His Names and Past-times. This is the cause of my sorrow. |4| Kr̥ṣṇa Dāsa says that with an intention of minimizing this sorrow of mine, I have compiled this booklet. |5|

Illuminating Commentary (Prakāśikā-Vr̥tti)- In the above verses, Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu has been referred to as ‘Channa-avatāra’ – which means ‘The hidden incarnation’.
Why did Kr̥ṣṇa appear in a hidden form in this age of quarrel and hypocrisy? In order to relish the innermost feelings that arise in the heart of Śrīmatī Rādhārānī for Himself, Kr̥ṣṇa has now appeared again in this hidden form. Had He not appeared in a hidden form, then the people in general would have known His Nature as the Absolute Truth, and they would have thus offered their devotional service to Him, by accepting Him as The Personality of God-Head. This would be an impediment in fulfilling His most cherished desire to taste the nectarine mellows of devotional moods, as is relished by Śrī-Rādhikā. (In order to relish these devotional moods, even Kr̥ṣṇa first needs to forget about His own identity as ‘The Supreme Personality of God-Head’. For this Kr̥ṣṇa has provided sufficient power to His own Intrinsic-potency known as ‘Yōgamāyā’. Therefore, Yōgamāyā can enable Kr̥ṣṇa to sometimes forget and sometimes remember His own identity as the Supreme-Person, depending on the moods that Kr̥ṣṇa wishes to relish at a particular moment.

But the question is– with what substance does Kr̥ṣṇa hides His own Godliness and appears in a hidden form as ‘Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu’? To this our answer is– He hides His Godliness by covering it with the golden colour and the ecstatic-moods of Śrī-Rādhikā: (tāra gaura kāntayē tōmāra sarva aṅga ḍhakā– C.C.- 2/8/269)
